The Auburn Tigers are starting a new era under a new head coach in Alex Golesh, but it sounds like he might be leaning on an old head coach who had a ton of success in order to figure out how it needs to be done at Auburn.
Gus Malzahn — who announced his retirement earlier this offseason from coaching and joined the College Football Playoff committee — is still in the Auburn area, and Golesh is getting a ton of advice from him on how to steer the ship on The Plains.
He spoke about Malzahn after the Tigers’ latest scrimmage and why he is utilizing all of his resources.
“He’s moving back [to Auburn] and will be a huge resource for me and I’m super grateful for him and Kristi and the support they’ve shown myself and Lex which has been awesome, so I’m super grateful to have a wealth of knowledge here and a guy that cares about Auburn,” Golesh said when asked about Malzahn being present at a couple practices.
“A guy who’s done it at a high, high level. For me, I’ve got no ego in this thing, man. If there’s somebody that’s been there, done that, and had success, I am all ears. I just asked him for his notes from the scrimmage…He loves this place. However it all shook out, he is so grateful for what this place meant to him and still does….Gus has forgotten more football than I know so I’m gonna take advantage of every bit of it.”
Auburn fans who may still hold ill will towards Malzahn after things ended unceremoniously should probably pack it away after seeing the way the former head coach still cares so deeply about Auburn.
Leaning on someone like Malzahn, Golesh is bound to have a whole lot better of a chance for success.
