The NFL Draft is on Thursday night, and no one has a better perspective of how things go both from the college side and the pro side than former Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
Before becoming the greatest coach in the history of college football in Tuscaloosa, Saban, of course, spent a stint as head coach for the Miami Dolphins, meaning he has been through a couple of drafts.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” he shared some hilarious insight into how things go in the draft room, especially when a coach and general manager disagree.
“You’ve heard me talk about vertical integration in the NFL from the owner to the president to the GM to the coaches to the staff so you get the right kind of players,” Saban began when asked about the importance of alignment on draft decisions. “If the GM wants this kind of player & the coach wants [another] kind of player, it’s not gonna fit systematically and somebody is gonna get fired and most of the time it’s the coach, the GM is sitting in the press box telling the owner what he wants to hear.”
Saban went on to highlight the difference between evaluating players to recruit in college when he largely could have anyone he wanted, versus a limited amount of draft assets. He spoke about how different it was, something which made him so great at the college level.
In all likelihood, there will be some more golden moments from Saban as he gets set to cover another NFL Draft in a media capacity rather than a coaching capacity.
