Ty Simpson shares Saban mindset he is taking into rookie season for Rams

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson was selected in last Thursday night’s first round of the NFL Draft with the No. 13 overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams, shocking many across the league.

The Rams are one of the best teams in football and have last year’s league MVP in Matthew Stafford at quarterback, meaning Simpson is very likely to sit for at least a year or two and have the opportunity to learn from a future Hall of Famer and an elite coaching staff.

While of course he wants to play, the Crimson Tide legend is not letting it get him down and will draw on an old Nick Saban mindset as he begins his career.

“I learned from Coach Saban that if you have expectations you are bound to fail,” Simpson began. “If I came in here and said I want to win rookie of the year, Matthew Stafford just won the MVP, that’s gonna be a fail.”

“My plan is just to get better each day. I’m blessed enough to be in the room with a great quarterback room, great coaches, reigning MVP, the best head coach in football. I just wanna soak up all that knowledge. Today starts my NFL career, and tomorrow will be the second day. I just wanna get better each and every day so eventually I have a really long career like Matthew.”

Simpson is going to have the kind of opportunity that a first round QB rarely gets: the chance to develop without any of the pressure to be ready to go right away. As someone without a ton of college starts under his belt, this could be absolutely huge.

If he truly does have that kind of mindset, the sky could be the limit for him once he does eventually get on the field.
