Damon Morgan has been named president and CEO of PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, with the leadership transition set to take effect June 1, according to the cooperative’s announcement.
Morgan, who currently serves as executive vice president and chief operating officer, brings more than four decades of experience with the organization. He has held his current role since 2013, overseeing PowerSouth’s generation and transmission operations.
“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to lead in this new capacity,” Morgan said. “PowerSouth has an 85-year tradition of unwavering service to our members across Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. When I walk the halls at PowerSouth, I am so proud of the dedication of our team and the vital services we deliver. I look forward to advancing PowerSouth’s high standard of excellence and strengthening our commitment to our members and the communities they serve.”
Morgan will succeed Gary Smith, who is retiring June 1 after 36 years with the cooperative. Smith served as CEO for 26 years, the longest tenure in the organization’s history.
“Damon’s deep understanding of our business, our employees, and the challenges before us make him a remarkable leader for PowerSouth,” Smith said. “He is well-positioned to guide the company forward while continuing our commitment to safety, member unity, and providing reliable, affordable power to the communities our members serve. We look forward to a smooth transition over the coming weeks.”
A native of Escambia County, Florida, Morgan holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University and is a certified professional engineer. He and his wife, Dorothy, have three sons and six grandchildren.
