Former Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson on Monday endorsed Doug Harwell in the May 19 Republican primary for Alabama Senate District 34, the open seat being vacated by State Sen. Jack Williams (R-Wilmer), who’s running for Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries instead of seeking re-election.

Stimpson served three terms as mayor from 2013 to 2025 and opted not to seek a fourth.

Citing the candidate’s strong leadership skills and commitment to conservative change, former Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced on Monday his endorsement of Doug Harwell in the Senate District 34 Republican primary on May 19.

Stimpson, who served as mayor of the Azalea City from 2013 to 2025 before declining to run for a fourth term despite his continuing popularity, said:

“With a new mayor in office and an aggressive economic development and job recruitment strategy, Mobile is on the move, but we must have strong leadership in the Alabama State Senate to supplement our efforts at home. Through his selfless service on the school board and his deep roots in our area, Doug Harwell has proven that he has the skills, the leadership, and the focus to stand tall for Mobile County in the committee rooms, corridors, and chambers of the Alabama State House.”

Stimpson continued, “A man of deep conservative values and even deeper Christian faith, I know that Mobile’s best days remain ahead with Doug Harwell navigating our way through Montgomery, and I encourage my fellow Gulf Coast residents to join me in supporting his candidacy.”

Harwell, a lifelong resident of Mobile County, is a small business owner who served nearly 12 years on the Mobile County school board representing the communities of Semmes, Citronelle, and the northwest portion of the county.

He is focusing his Senate campaign on fighting crime in our streets, improving public schools, and creating an economic atmosphere that attracts long-lasting, well-paying, 21st Century jobs for current and future generations of Mobile County workers.
