A new innovation facility focused on drone technology and national defense has launched in Southeast Alabama, with leaders saying the effort could position the Wiregrass as a hub for next-generation military capabilities and economic growth.
Grow Southeast Alabama on Monday announced the official launch of FLIGHTWERX, a first-of-its-kind facility located near Fort Rucker, the home of Army Aviation.
The center is designed to support the development and testing of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), while bringing together military personnel, industry leaders, academic institutions and community partners under one roof.
Brig. Gen. Ken Cole, Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, said the facility comes at a critical time for military innovation.
“The character of warfare is changing, and unmanned systems are now central to how we train, fight, and win. Facilities like FlightWerX give our Soldiers hands-on access to emerging technologies while bringing together academia, industry, government, and the community. We are excited about this collaboration taking place right here in the Wiregrass.”
Local and regional leaders said the project represents more than a defense initiative, calling it a long-term investment in Southeast Alabama’s economic future.
“FLIGHTWERX is a defining moment for our region. This initiative not only supports the mission at Fort Rucker, but it also solidifies its position as a national leader in UAS defense and innovation. We are creating a space where ideas turn into capability; where military, industry, and education come together to shape the future. This is how we propel Southeast Alabama forward for generations to come,” said Melody Lee, executive director of Grow Southeast Alabama.
Officials emphasized the broader economic impact, including workforce development and job creation tied to high-demand technology careers.
“This is a transformative investment for Daleville and the entire Wiregrass region. FLIGHTWERX brings new energy, new opportunity, and a clear pathway for workforce development tied to high-demand, high-tech careers. It strengthens our local economy while connecting our community directly to the future of national defense,” said Daleville Mayor Jayme Stayton.
The initiative has also received support from Innovate Alabama, which leaders say aligns with broader efforts to grow the state’s innovation ecosystem.
“Innovate Alabama is proud to support the launch of FLIGHTWERX as a catalytic investment in the state’s innovation ecosystem. This initiative aligns directly with our focus on developing talent, strengthening place-based innovation, and expanding resources for emerging industries. FLIGHTWERX represents the kind of forward-thinking, collaborative effort that will position Alabama as a leader in UAS and defense technology,” said Cynthia Crutchfield of Innovate Alabama.
The facility’s opening marks the completion of Phase 1 of the project, which included establishing a functional innovation space, launching initial STEM and drone-related programming, and forming partnerships with Fort Rucker, universities and private industry.
Future phases are expected to expand research and prototyping capabilities, pursue federal funding opportunities and develop accelerator programs aimed at growing both defense-related technologies and workforce pipelines.
