Could chaos ensue with potential five-way tie for SEC regular season title?

With Alabama and Auburn losing to Tennessee last week, it nearly erased any possibility that either squad could claim a sole outright SEC regular season title.

However, both are still alive in the pursuit of a share of the title.

But there is a doomsday scenario that could play in this final week of the regular season that would end in a mind boggling five-way tie for the title.

It would begin tonight with an Alabama loss at Florida (the Gators are slight favorites) and an Auburn victory over Missouri (Auburn is a heavy favorite).

That would move both teams to 12-5 headed into the final game.

Then, on Wednesday evening, South Carolina at home would have to defeat a Tennessee team they defeated in Knoxville as well as a Kentucky win over Vanderbilt.

That would move Tennessee and South Carolina to a tie for first 13-4 and boost Kentucky to a tie for second at 12-5.

Following the weekday games, a chaotic Saturday, that seems not so far fetched, could end in the huge tie:

  • South Carolina loses a tough road game at Mississippi State and Kentucky defeats Tennessee, pulling all three to 13-5.
  • Alabama and Auburn would also have to win home games against Arkansas and Georgia, respectively, where they will both be heavily favored.

This would pull the Tide and Tigers to 13-5, and thus a five-way split title to end the regular season.

If things were to play out that way, Alabama would drop outside of double-bye territory in the SEC Tournament to the 5th seed, while Auburn would sit at No. 4, Tennessee at No. 3, Kentucky at No. 2, and South Carolina at No. 1.

March Madness is certainly upon us, and the madness in the SEC is only just getting started.
