U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) remains hopeful that Republicans in Congress can pass several of President Donald Trump’s priorities through a reconciliation package.
Republican leaders have hinted in recent days that they plan on trying to pass funding for Department for Homeland Security (DHS), more money for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and pass the Save America Act through a reconciliation bill.
The reconciliation process would allow the legislation to pass without having to bust the filibuster, but it has to be approved by the Senate Parliamentarian.
Moore discussed the issue Wednesday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”
“We’ve had good success with reconciliation and the session, and so we’ll see how it comes out and what we can get everybody to agree on from a reconciliation standpoint, within our own party in the House, and then, once we get that, then we’ve got to get it through the parliamentarian in the Senate,” Moore explained. “So it’s not an easy task, but it’s one worth taking on. And I’m cautiously optimistic.”
The congressman believes Republicans need to try and pass these priorities through reconciliation first before agreeing to a bad deal with Democrats.
“And so if we’re going to do the reconciliation, I say we get as much as we can, but do it first…then we go ahead with this DHS thing that the Senate sent back to us, but we don’t want to move that until we know that ICE and border have the money,” he said. “People elected the President to clean the mess up and to close the U.S. southern border, and they literally now want to just defund those guys zero, back out, let the border come back open.”
“I would love to have some of the, some of the Save Act provisions within reconciliation, and I think we can move it, it’s just a matter of how much can we get in it and get through parliamentarian in the Senate to get it to the floor, to get it passed,” he added.
