Troy University Trojans’ longtime “Voice of the Trojans” as well as co-host of Longshore and McKnight from Yellowhammer News, Barry McKnight, has been named the National Sports Media Association Alabama Sportscaster of the Year, sharing the honor with David Crane of UAB.
McKnight has served as Troy’s play by play voice for numerous athletic events since 2002 both on the radio as well as ESPN+ broadcasts and has won numerous other awards including the AP Award for Broadcast Excellence, the AP Play-by-Play Broadcaster of the Year, and the Sun Belt Conference Broadcaster of the Year.
Troy Athletics Director Brent Jones issued a statement on how much McKnight means to the school to WTVY News 4, saying he is synonymous with Troy.
“I can’t think of a more worthy person and broadcaster than Barry McKnight,” Jones said. “His voice, insight and description are synonymous with Troy University Athletics. We are incredibly grateful for his hard work and dedication to tell the stories of our student-athletes and teams.”
Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. also offered tremendous praise, calling McKnight the best in the business.
“Barry McKnight is not only the best sportscaster in Alabama, he is the best in the business,” Hawkins Jr. said. “Troy University is proud that Barry is the Voice of the Trojans.”
With the Sportscaster of the Year award, McKnight joins an elite list of broadcasting talent which includes Chris Stewart, Eli Gold, Andy Burcham, Rod Bramblett, and Paul Finebaum. It’s a tremendous honor for McKnight and one he is surely grateful to receive. He will receive the award at the annual NSMA convention which is being held this summer in North Carolina.
Earlier in the fall, Yellowhammer News announced a partnership with Longshore and McKnight to bring the longtime duo to the internet and airwaves on a daily morning show which streams live on Facebook and YouTube each weekday morning.
