The Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Kentucky Wildcats in a tale of two halves on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, winning a game it trailed at halftime for the first time under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

For as horrific as the first half was, especially from Keelon Russell on the offensive side of the ball with the Tide trailing 17-13 at the break — the second half was absolutely incredible, with 32 unanswered points and a second-half shutout that allowed Alabama to find its footing.

Things were far from perfect and Russell is going to have to clean up the turnovers after recording three in the first half, but it’s hard not to be encouraged by what the defense was able to do throughout the afternoon.

With a pick-six by linebacker Luke Metz early in the game after Russell gave away one of his own, the unit set the tone early that they had their young quarterback’s back on a day where he looked a little bit overwhelmed as a young player in his first SEC start on the road.

All of this begs the question just how great this defense can be this year under Kane Wommack, and if it really is that strong, is it a unit capable of carrying Alabama to a deep run in 2026?

It’s clear that the offense is going to be a little bit more of a work in progress, though they have shown some strides when it comes to running the ball, which of course will make things easier on a quarterback than what they were able to do on the ground last season.

Performances like Saturday afternoon should inspire confidence in fans that not only is this a defense first team, but the unit might just be strong enough to carry this team to a whole lot of victories as the offense continues to figure itself out week after week.

If things start to come together on the offensive side of the ball as well, perhaps this could be a legitimate national title threat in 2026.
