The Auburn Tigers are hosting a very unique event in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Tuesday ahead of the start of this summer’s World Cup with an exhibition international friendly soccer match between Argentina and Iceland.
Though soccer, of course, is far from the most popular sport in the state of Alabama, those who do have a passion for the game are going to be out in full force on The Plains.
With defending World Cup champion Argentina and soccer icon Lionel Messi expected to see at least a little action, the match is widely expected to sell out. A capacity crowd would set the record for attendance at a soccer match in Alabama history.
In 1996, Legion Field hosted 11 matches during the Atlanta Summer Olympics and more than 83,000 fans packed the venue to see the United States take on Argentina, however, with Jordan-Hare having a capacity of close to 90,000, the chance of shattering that record is very much realistic.
The game is going to begin at 7:30 p.m. CST and fans who still want to purchase tickets for the historic event can buy them here.
