Throughout the better part of the last two years, the idea of legalized sports betting has gained momentum in the state of Alabama. Though it has fallen short of making it to the ballot, it’s easy to see that betting may now have more momentum in the state than it ever has.
Currently, sports betting is legal in 38 states and the District of Columbia, putting Alabama behind the 8-ball in terms of tax revenue that could be generated from the legalization of wagering.
Bet on Alabama, a website dedicated to drawing attention to the issue, recently released a new advertisement on their social media pages, demonstrating the billions of dollars lost by not having any form of legalized sports betting in the state.
“Every year in Alabama, we miss out on between $65 and $90 million in tax revenue by not legalizing sports betting here in our state,” the ad begins. “Money that can be used to improve our roads and bridges, or elevate our school systems and support our first responders. Contact your legislator to ensure that sports betting is legalized in Alabama.”

Bet on Alabama describes themselves as a coalition of Alabamians “who recognize the need for safe, legally sanctioned sports betting platforms in a state that sees residents crossing state lines to bet and allowing bordering states to receive millions in tax revenue.”
