The Alabama Crimson Tide won its opening game on Saturday afternoon by a score of 48-10, and while the East Carolina Pirates did not present a massive test, it was a nice start to the season for the team.

All eyes were understandably on Keelon Russell, and while Russell was impressive through the air as well as finishing as the game’s leading rusher with his legs, it was the running backs for Alabama which raised some eyebrows across the state. While five of them got at least one touch on Saturday, it was true freshman EJ Crowell who started to establish himself as a future force in this offense.

Notably, Crowell missed a good chunk of the spring and fall camps with a variety of minor injuries, but he looked like a seasoned veteran with the kind of vision, burst, speed, and patience to make a massive impact even on plays where the blocking is not perfect.

Even on just seven carries for 37 yards and his first career touchdown, Crowell simply looked different when he was out there. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s this team’s lead back a month or so into the season.

Crowell is an Alabama native who was a superstar at Jackson High School, and technically should be in his senior year of high school after reclassifying from the class of 2027 to 2026 and coming to Alabama a year early. Rated as the No. 1 running back in the nation for 2026, many wondered whether he could come in and make an instant impact.

During the opener on Saturday, Crowell answered that question and more. He’s already become someone who must be watched very closely both by fans and by opposing defenses moving forward.
