Mary G. Montgomery High School in Semmes has dominated the high school football news cycle in Alabama all offseason thanks to its ongoing coaching saga — and even with the season underway, the drama just won’t go away.

The Vikings program was not only placed on probation and banned from the postseason for 2026, but head coach Zach Golson was suspended for the entire year and placed on administrative leave with no indications that he would be returning.

Now, Golson — who has contested the recruiting allegations against him and his now-former program — has filed a lawsuit against the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) and the Mobile County Public Schools System (MCPSS) leadership seeking due process.

Most recently, an appeal from Mary G. Montgomery to lift the team’s postseason ban was denied, upholding the sanctions that bar the Vikings from the playoffs this year.

AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon, AHSAA investigator Chuck Anderson, MCPSS Superintendent Chresal Threadgill and MGM Principal David Diaz were all named in the lawsuit which alleged that “preemptive conclusions” were drawn in the case.

“If everyone involved believes this process was fair, unbiased and supported by the evidence, then there should be no reason to oppose a complete and independent review of the record,” Golson said in a statement to Call News. “I am willing to have every decision I made, every message I sent, every phone call I made and every action I took examined. I am asking everyone else involved to show the same willingness. If I am wrong, let the evidence prove me wrong. If the evidence does not support punishment on this scale, then have the courage to correct it.”

Golson had led MGM to a 37-10 record over the previous four seasons, including playoff appearances in all four years despite an 0-10 record the year before he arrived. Prior to his tenure, the Vikings program had not been to the playoffs since 2002.

What’s next remains to be seen, but Golson has continuously claimed innocence throughout the process and the latest drastic step is one that will make waves across the state.
