The U.S. Senate campaign of former Auburn head football coach Tommy Tuberville is running an advertisement during the final weeks of his general election contest that details a number of ethics reforms supported by the Republican candidate.
In the 30-second spot, Tuberville calls for term limits for members of Congress, banning elected officials from becoming lobbyists when they leave office and withholding paychecks from lawmakers until they pass a balanced budget.
“Only an outsider like me can help President Trump drain the swamp, and any of the proposals outlined in this ad will begin the process of pulling the plug,” Tuberville said in a statement accompanying the widespread release of the ad.
The spot began airing over the weekend, and Tuberville’s campaign says it will be playing on broadcast and cable stations around the state along with social media outlets.
Tuberville’s argument that lawmakers in Washington not be allowed to draw a paycheck while the federal budget is unbalanced is the most recent example of his focus on legislative pay. He has promised to donate his salary, if elected, to Alabama charities that support veterans.
Also in the new ad are sharp criticisms of U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL), Tuberville’s November 3 opponent and Alabama’s lone statewide elected Democrat.
“Jones is with Biden and Pelosi — not you,” Tuberville says straight into the camera. The statement appears to be a reference to the frequency with which Jones votes the Democratic Party line, which is 79% of the time per the latest available numbers.
“Washington politicians could learn a lot from the folks in small town Alabama, but Doug Jones, he’s too liberal to teach them,” comments the former coach in the ad.
Tuberville summarized the object of his latest commercial in a release, saying, “Doug Jones has had his chance, and he failed our state, so now it’s time to elect a senator who will work to fundamentally change the way that Washington operates.”
The spot ends with footage of Tuberville exiting Air Force One next to President Trump, who has been a vocal and consistent supporter of the coach’s campaign since the spring and is extremely popular in the Yellowhammer State.
