President Donald Trump’s political operation noticed Doug Jones’s fight with Alabama’s sawmills and picked the sawmills.

“Why is the Democrat candidate for governor in Alabama siding with Canada instead of Alabama lumber companies?” Trump’s team asked in a social media post on Monday night. “Doug Jones is CANADA FIRST!”

The dispatch came a day after Yellowhammer News reported that the Alabama forestry industry, including Caroline Dauzat, a fourth-generation owner of Rex Lumber and its $150 million sawmill in Troy, called Jones’s claim that Trump’s Canada tariffs hurt Alabama workers “completely inaccurate.”

“Canada is the biggest importer of Alabama goods and Trump’s trade war with Canada is gonna hurt Alabama workers,” the Democrat nominee for governor posted to Facebook on Wednesday  “But Tommy Tuberville just takes a knee any time Trump speaks. What kind of ‘coach’ takes a knee when your team is losing! That’s not Alabama leadership folks!”

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s campaign chalked up Jones’ attack on Alabama industry to simply “DC talking points from DC Doug.”

“I would say the Troy mill is a product of the trade case,” Dauzat told Yellowhammer News. Her family company has sawed Southern Yellow Pine since 1926, runs four mills across three states and employs more than 700 people.

Their operation in Troy promised Pike County 110 jobs and hired 170.

“It’s a basic question, and Trump nails this every single time,” she said. “Do we want the jobs here, and do we want to have the value added here, or are we outsourcing everything?”

The Alabama Forestry Association endorsed Tuberville for governor in June 2025.

“Coach’s record is second to none in fighting for the forest industry in the U.S. Senate,” AFA President and CEO Chris Isaacson said in a statement to Yellowhammer News.

“His work to roll back regulations that hinder businesses and fight for Alabama First policies have been his hallmark in Washington. As Governor, we know he will bring with him that same energy and commitment to fight for Alabama’s forest industry and grow our state’s rural economy.”

Trump has endorsed Tuberville, who beat Jones by roughly 20 points in 2020. The rematch is slated for Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
