The Alabama Crimson Tide wrapped up their spring on Saturday afternoon with an A-Day practice in front of a mostly empty Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Entering the spring and undoubtedly also throughout summer and fall camp, the main talking point from fans was understandably who is going to start at quarterback.
Though Ty Simpson has a leg up over Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, comments last week from head coach Kalen DeBoer indicated that maybe this is a wide open race.
Of course, there is not a game tomorrow, but if there was, there seems to be a defined leader in the clubhouse and current winner of the starting job.
New offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb made that very clear on Monday when he told the media that Simpson is currently the hypothetical starter:
Alabama OC Ryan Grubb on the QB battle:
“If we’re playing a football game tomorrow, Ty Simpson would start, and he earned that. And I know that’s the line everybody’s looking for.” pic.twitter.com/VJL6yJd31D— The Next Round (@NextRoundLive) April 14, 2025
“I know everybody wants to know about that position and where things are at,” Grubb said. “At the end of the day, if we’re playing a football game tomorrow, Ty Simpson would start, and he earned that. And I know that’s the line everybody’s looking for.”
Grubb’s answer does not exactly come as a huge shock and he would go on to praise each of the other two in Mack and Russell individually as to how they have grown over the course of spring, but hearing there is a current leader in the clubhouse after the spring is notable from a prominent Tide staff member.
