Every Tuesday we present “The Auburn Corner” featuring a breakdown of the previous game, a preview of the upcoming game, and everything in between.
This week, Auburn hits the road for an all-Tiger matchup in Baton Rouge against a talented but struggling LSU team.
Jayden Daniels and the LSU offense has lived up to the billing. The Tigers offense is averaging nearly 45 points per game and Daniels is putting up brilliant performance after brilliant performance.
Unfortunately, however, the defense has been significantly worse than anticipated and is a major liability for a team that had national championship aspirations before the season.
LSU got the win at Missouri, but the defense is fresh off nearly getting 40-pieced and giving up over 500 yards. This came just a week after it gave up 55 points at Ole Miss and a staggering 706 total yards.
With a matchup between LSU and Auburn this week, it’s a true clash of the titans between a terrible passing offense and a terrible pass defense.
Coming off the bye week for Head Coach Hugh Freeze and Auburn, a date with the LSU secondary could be just what the doctor ordered. The passing attack has not thrown for over 100 yards against an SEC opponent in nearly a full calendar year.
However, you could make the same argument for LSU in that facing Auburn’s offense gives them an opportunity to get back on track and stop the bleeding in the secondary.
Both Ole Miss and Missouri were able to run the ball successfully on LSU as well, so you’d have to think that’s the game plan Freeze will come into Baton Rouge with once again.
That being said, Auburn must exploit LSU’s issues in the secondary to be able to keep this one close. LSU is favored by 11 points.
Look for Auburn to keep this one close against a team they match up wonderfully against. Ultimately though, the LSU offense may very well be too much for Auburn to keep with.
It’s an opportunity for the weaknesses of both teams to get right in a fascinating matchup on Saturday night in Death Valley.
Something will have to give, and it won’t be long before we find out which unit gives first.
