The SEC may have just gotten a massive boost in its chances to secure numerous spots in the College Football Playoff field.

According to a report from Heather Dinich of ESPN, the CFP selection committee will include a new data point in its evaluations that considers the strength of conferences based on the schedule strength of each team in the league. As SEC teams negotiate a 9-game gauntlet this season, the strength of schedule rankings are littered with teams in the South up top.

This is an “inside baseball” type stat that won’t trump quality wins, schedule strength and record strength and what the committee sees on film. Dinich says the intended goal will help separate teams from within the same league who have similar records based on the quality of the teams they play in the league. Though SEC schedules are never easy, some teams certainly get the shorter end of the stick on a yearly basis, and this new metric is intended to bake that in.

Teams with comparable records across different conferences – i.e. a 9-3 SEC team versus a 9-3 Big 12 team – can be easier to separate based on the strength of their respective leagues.

Dinich clarified that this new data point is not going to trump any of the major evaluators, such as quality wins and the eye test, however, it is one more way the committee can assure that the best teams in the country are in the 12-team playoff field.

In a year where the SEC looks stronger than ever, perhaps this could work to their benefit.
