The Jefferson County Republican Party held its straw poll breakfast Saturday at the Gardendale Civic Center.
This year, it drew roughly 200 of some of the most engaged GOP voters for the long-running tradition that gives Republican primary candidates an early read on Alabama’s most populous county ahead of the May 19 ballot.
For a $25 admission, attendees received breakfast, a ballot covering races up and down the ticket from the U.S. Senate to local legislative seats, and facetime with just about all the candidates on it.
Former U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson posted the strongest showing in the weekend’s Senate straw vote, edging out U.S. Rep. Barry Moore and Attorney General Steve Marshall. Hudson, the 2022 GOP nominee for Jefferson County sheriff, was on home turf in Saturday’s poll.

In the heated primary race for Alabama Attorney General, former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell won out over his main adversary in the race, Katherine Robertson, but had an almost photo finish with Blount County DA, Pam Casey.
