Everyone still has questions about the assassination attempt of President Trump. A man taking a shot 150 yards away at a former president during his rally should never have happened. One innocent man should not have died on that day. Ongoing investigations have given light to poor, catastrophically insufficient communication between Secret Service and the Pennsylvania local law enforcement.
We need fruitful answers because this can never happen again. Fortunately, Congress will find the truth about what really happened and why there was an enormous security breach.
House Republicans created the House task force to investigate the assassination attempt on President Trump. Task force Chairman Mike Kelly (R-PA) and twelve other task force members will dive deeper to truly understand what happened on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Selected by Speaker Mike Johnson, the panel of Members are deeply determined to delivering justice for President Trump and his family. Chairman Kelly, along with ranking member Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO), are sending two letters to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Justice (DOJ), demanding all records related to the shooting be responsibly delivered to the task force.
The bipartisan letters are addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe, Jr.
I have the utmost confidence the task force will produce answers to the American people’s questions—they deserve to know. The importance of this task force cannot be stated enough, and their efforts will conclude by December 13, 2024. The investigation will be prioritized to ensure a swift, timely delivery of justice.
Chairman Kelly, ranking member Crow, and other Democratic and Republican Members are diligently working hand in hand to discover if and where the Secret Service went wrong on the day of the shooting.
House Republicans are committed to uncovering why a former president was nearly killed. Former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle failed to answer simple questions related to the shooting. She should have been fired immediately, but resigned shortly after the House Committee hearing in July.
That day, the Secret Service of the United States failed former President Trump and the American people. We will not stop searching for answers to hold all parties accountable.
