The Jay Mitchell campaign for AG released a new video featuring former Montgomery police officer Aaron Cody Smith, who targeted rival candidate Katherine Robertson over her role in his case while serving as chief counsel in the attorney general’s office.

“Robertson fought to uphold my conviction, even though she knew I was innocent,” Smith said. “If you back the blue, you cannot vote for Katherine Robertson.”

Smith was convicted of manslaughter in 2019 after an on-duty shooting. Then-Justice Mitchell later wrote that it was “difficult to understand how a reasonable, properly instructed jury could have convicted Smith.” Smith was released in 2024 after a plea agreement.

“Nobody backed me except for Jay Mitchell,” Smith said. “Jay had a lot on the line and he still did the right thing. He fought for me and he will fight for anyone wearing the badge.”
