The race for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District continues to be a close one according to a new poll released this week.
A recent survey by Remington Research Group of 642 likely voters conducted October 23-25 shows State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) ahead by 2 points, 48%-46%, against U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Montgomery).
Republicans were hoping to pick up the seat after the state went back to its 2023 redistricted map. The U.S. Supreme Court lifted the injunction on Alabama’s map earlier this year after its 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais struck down race-based redistricting.
Other signs of a tightening contest include Sabato’s Crystal Ball changing the race in Democrats’ favor from “leans Republican” to “toss-up” on Tuesday. The Cook Political Report also believes the race is getting closer. On Friday they moved the race from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican.”
President Donald Trump reemphasized his support for Marques in the race on Monday and again Thursday, posting a video to Truth Social encouraging Republicans in the district to make sure to vote for the candidate on election day.
“I’m asking you to get out and vote for Rhett Marques to be your next representative for Alabama’s second congressional district,” Trump said. “He has my complete and total endorsement—a great person. Rhett is a successful small business owner who voted to cut your taxes by $1.5 billion in the state legislature. As your next congressman, he will vote to keep our border strong and secure like I’ve done. We have the best border, safest border anywhere in the world right now. Support our military, lower your energy costs, and defend Alabama values all the way.”
Trump also blasted Figures as a left-wing radical.
“People that murdered, people that robbed, people that raped; he wants to get them out of jail,” he said. “In Congress, Figures voted against the largest tax cuts in American history. But he voted in favor of the transgender mutilation of your children, in favor of men in women’s sports, and against hundreds of millions of dollars to save Alabama’s rural hospitals; he was against that.”
