State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) leads the six-candidate Republican field in the AL-02 special primary by 20 points, according to a new poll, though 42% of likely voters remain undecided with two months until the August 11 election.

The survey from Peak Insights, conducted June 8-9 among 400 likely Republican special primary voters via text, found Marques at 30% with Joshua McKee in second at 10%.

The remaining candidates registered in single digits: Hampton Harris and David Matthews at 4% each, James Richardson at 2%, and Christian Horn at 1%. The poll carries a margin of error of 5 points.

Marques leads in both the Dothan and Montgomery media markets and across all age groups and both genders. Among voters who identify with the Trump-MAGA wing of the party, who make up 60% of the AL-02 primary electorate, Marques leads McKee 27% to 11%.

The special primary follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in May clearing the Alabama Legislature’s redrawn congressional map for the 2026 elections. Governor Kay Ivey set the August 11 special primary for four affected districts, including the 2nd, with no runoff.

The newly drawn district, currently held by U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile), is expected to favor Republicans under the new lines.

Voter awareness remains low. Only 8% of respondents correctly identified the August 11 election date, while 74% gave an incorrect answer and 15% said they did not know.

Marques currently represents House District 91, the seat previously held by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise). He originally filed to run in the 1st Congressional District before switching to the redrawn 2nd after the Supreme Court ruling.
