If you live in rural Alabama, getting quality health care should not depend on how far you are willing to drive.

I fought to make sure Alabama had a seat at the table as President Trump and Republicans in Congress delivered the Rural Health Transformation Program. Now, $144 million is being put to work through 138 grants across Alabama to expand access to care, strengthen our health care workforce, and modernize rural health care.

Through this program, Alabama communities will receive the tools needed to solve problems that Washington cannot solve with a one-size-fits-all approach.

These investments will help rural providers modernize electronic health records and cybersecurity, expand telehealth and mobile health services, improve patient transportation, and strengthen emergency and maternal care. They will also expand access to mental health and substance abuse treatment, including through school-based services and mobile crisis response.

We are also investing in the people who provide that care. The program will support rural residency and training programs, scholarships, apprenticeships and recruitment efforts for doctors, nurses, EMS professionals, and other health care workers. That means building a workforce that can serve Alabama communities close to home.

I believe the people closest to these challenges should have a voice in solving them. A rural hospital in the Wiregrass does not have the same needs as a hospital in Birmingham. A community in Baldwin County may need something different than a community in North Alabama.

That is what makes this approach different. Instead of simply throwing money at a problem, we are giving communities flexibility to identify their needs, modernize their systems, and find innovative ways to deliver care.

This $144 million investment will strengthen our health care workforce, expand access to care and give rural Alabamians more opportunities to get the quality care they deserve, closer to home. I am proud to have supported Trump’s rural health agenda and helped deliver this investment for Alabama.
