Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says Shomari Figures can still win despite redistricting

Leaders in the Democratic Party still believe that U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) has a chance at being reelected to Congress despite the changes to Alabama’s congressional map.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court sided with the Yellowhammer State, the congressional map reverts back to the one drawn by the Legislature in 2023. This current map reduces the number of majority-Black or near-majority-Black districts from two to one, a shift expected to flip the seat currently held by Figures to Republicans.

Despite the challenges, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is arguing that Figures can still win. The group has also decided to actively support the candidate in the upcoming election.

“Shomari is the fighter that the people of Alabama need in Congress,” U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Washington) said in a statement. “He has dedicated his career to serving the communities that raised him, and in Congress he has shown he is willing to work with anyone to lower costs, expand access to health care, and make life better for the people of the 2nd District.”

The DCCC announced that Figures’ election will be a part of its Frontline campaign to try to win control of Congress. According to their website, “Frontline is the DCCC’s battle-tested program to ensure Democratic Members of Congress from the most competitive seats have both the resources and cutting-edge information they need to execute effective reelection campaigns.”

“Our path back to the majority hinges on holding seats like Shomari’s,” DelBene added. “Cynical efforts to racially gerrymander Shomari out of his seat and silence the voice of the people of Alabama will be rejected by voters in November, and I look forward to welcoming Shomari back to Congress.”
