The Democratic nominee for Alabama Governor, former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook), is trying to downplay the rise of socialism in his own party.
In November, Jones will be going up against U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) in the gubernatorial election.
“A lot of this is also a little bit media driven,” Jones said on News Nation Sunday. “Because on the same day you had the Michigan primary, you also had a primary in Kansas in which Adam Hamilton, a Methodist minister, was nominated to the US Senate. You can’t say Roy Cooper in North Carolina or John Oaf who is Jewish in Georgia. You can’t say Scott Colum in Mississippi. You cannot say that so many of our uh nominees are far-left socialist, whatever you want to call them. It is just a boogeyman.”
Tuberville has been very critical of the rise of Democratic Socialists on the other side of the aisle.
“If you hate America, LEAVE,” Tuberville wrote on Sunday. “We don’t want you here.”

The senator has also not shied away from aligning Jones with the radical left.
“Shocker…a communist wants to STOP school choice in Alabama,” Tuberville said about Jones’ opposition to school choice in the state.

Jones claims these attacks from Tuberville are a distraction. He accused the senator of having no plan to make the state better.
“That is all we’re seeing from Tuberville is just like a, you know, the monster under the bed,” Jones said. “You know, it’s really kind of time for Tommy to get out of his pajamas and start talking about policy and what affects people with their gas prices, their electricity prices, and Medicaid and health care in Alabama, which is a huge issue.”
“He has no policy. He has done nothing but embarrass the state over the last six years,” he added. “He has done nothing in the United States Senate. And now he wants to bring that to the governor’s mansion with no plan. And the only thing he’s got is to call people communists and that’s about it. And now he’s got a record or a lack of record. Uh and he has said things that we have. He stayed hidden in 2020. He’s kind of staying hidden right now.”
