The Elmore County High School community is rallying around one of its own as he faces a serious health challenge. Charles Winchester Jr., the school’s offensive line coach, has been battling cancer and recently underwent an extensive 11.5-hour procedure as part of his treatment.

In response, the community has come together to support Coach Winchester and his family by organizing an online fundraiser. The effort, led by Margaret Weeks on behalf of Kaitlyn Winchester, aims to help cover medical expenses and provide financial relief during this difficult time.

WSFA12 spoke with Tyler Winchester, who is Charles’s son and an Elmore County coach, about his dad’s illness.

“It was an 11.5-hour procedure. A lot of things go through your mind. It’s a lot of the unknown during that time.”

He added that his father is determined to rejoin the coaching staff this fall and get back on the sidelines as a mentor to the team. Tyler described his dad as a father figure to many on the team and coaching staff as well.

Elmore County varsity football coach Kyle Caldwell noted the value of Winchester’s contribution to the team.

“We have a young staff,” said Caldwell. “With him coming in with 20 years of experience as a former head coach himself, it’s invaluable to us.”

The community’s support has been overwhelming, with many stepping up to offer assistance. Those wishing to contribute to Coach Winchester’s recovery and show their support can donate through the official GoFundMe campaign.
