Birmingham gears up for the 2025 World Police and Fire Games; Ivey calls for support of Team Alabama

Governor Kay Ivey is calling on all Alabamians to come together and celebrate as Birmingham prepares to host the 2025 World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) this summer. The highly anticipated international competition will take place from June 27 to July 6, bringing more than 8,500 first responders from over 70 countries to the Greater Birmingham area.

In a statement on social media, Ivey expressed her enthusiasm regarding the upcoming event.

“The 2025 World Police and Fire Games are happening here in Sweet Home, Alabama! Birmingham will host over 8,500 first responders to compete for the ultimate W,” she said. “I look forward to seeing Team Alabama show out, and I invite all Alabamians to join from June 27 to July 6.”

The WPFG, one of the world’s largest multi-sport events, is expected to significantly boost Alabama’s tourism industry, with an estimated economic impact of $65 million. The event will attract athletes and spectators who will stay in local hotels, dine at restaurants, and shop in Birmingham, providing a much-needed surge to businesses in the area and potentially across the state.

DJ Mackovets, CEO of the World Police & Fire Games, noted that the financial influx will benefit the state as first responders from around the globe cover their own expenses, including travel, lodging, food, and registration.

“They fly here, they stay in the hotels, they eat, they drink, they shop, all at their expense on top of them paying to register,” Mackovets explained. “These men and women, first responders, really are making an investment in our community when they come this summer.”

The Calhoun Journal reported that Ivey, joined by key state officials and public safety leaders at a press event on April 2, emphasized the honor of hosting such a prestigious event.

“I know we’ve got some of the toughest, most talented folks in the business. And frankly, I have no intention of seeing us get shown up in our own backyard,” she stated.

The WPFG will feature more than 70 sporting events, including specialized competitions such as Police Pistol Combat, Toughest Competitor Alive, and Ultimate Firefighter, alongside traditional sports like basketball, weightlifting, cycling, and soccer. Venues across the Birmingham area are being prepared to accommodate the diverse range of events.
