Birmingham’s long-discussed Grand River Technology Park could soon see new movement with a project aimed at adding another piece to the area’s motorsports identity.
The Birmingham City Council voted Tuesday to sell approximately 25 acres of undeveloped city-owned property along Bama Motorsports Parkway to BK PropCo LLC for $1.85 million. The company plans to build and operate what city documents describe as a “world-class karting facility.”
The proposed development would be located near Barber Motorsports Park and is intended to bring professional kart racing to Central Alabama.
Councilmember Hunter Williams said the project is an encouraging step for a site city leaders have discussed for years.
“We’ve looked at different things to do at this technology park,” Williams said during the council meeting. “I’m excited to see some movement.”
Williams said he hopes the project will become a catalyst for continued development in the area, pointing to its connection with Barber Motorsports Park and the region’s automotive racing industry.
According to CBS 42, BK PropCo general counsel Rob Wolfe said the facility is expected to create jobs, generate tax revenue and attract visitors from Central Alabama and surrounding states. Wolfe said developers hope to bring in family-friendly events as well as competitive kart racing.
Supporters say the project could help introduce more people to a sport that has long been a stepping stone for future race car drivers. The FIA’s development pathway to Formula One begins in karting, where drivers learn many of the fundamentals needed to advance in motorsports.
Williams also said many racers begin in go-karts before moving into higher levels of competition, including IndyCar and Formula One.
Developers describe the planned facility as a Class A venue that would be unique in Alabama and potentially across the Southeast. Wolfe told the station that the project is still in its early stages, but work could begin later this year.
