Auburn loses No. 1 spot, Alabama rises back into top five in final AP Poll

There’s a new No. 1 in the sport of college basketball – and for the first time in two months – it’s not the Auburn Tigers.

After Auburn lost their final two regular season games of the season to the Texas A&M Aggies and Alabama Crimson Tide, they dropped out of the top spot and slid down to No. 3 behind Duke and Houston, ironically both teams they defeated this season.

Still holding three of the top-five as a conference, the SEC sees the Florida Gators jump one spot to No. 4 and Alabama jump two spots to No. 5.

For the Tide, it’s a historic mark. By maintaining a top-ten ranking once again, Alabama for the first time in the history of the program has remained in the top-ten from the start of the regular season to the end of the regular season, a remarkable achievement of consistency this year.

The SEC owns four of the top-ten with the Tennessee Volunteers coming in at No. 8 and six of the top-15 with Texas A&M jumping eight spots to No. 14 and the Kentucky Wildcats jumping four spots to No. 15.

Mississippi State dropped out of the top-25 by Missouri remains the final team ranked in the conference at No. 21.

With the SEC Tournament getting started this week and the conference having the chance to potentially see double digit teams in the NCAA Tournament field, there are fireworks abound in the best conference in the sport.

Though the historic regular season may be over for the SEC, there’s still a month of exciting postseason action upon hoops fans around the conference.
