AG Marshall: Pennsylvania election turmoil could devalue elections in Alabama, other states across the country

The ongoing election saga in Pennsylvania, which has presidential results in question that could ultimately determine whether President Donald Trump is reelected or former Vice President Joe Biden is eventually certified as the next president, directly impacts Alabama’s election processes, according to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall.

Earlier this week, Marshall announced he had joined nine other attorneys general in an amicus brief supporting two lawsuits petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court to review the constitutionality of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision to extend the statutory deadline for mail-in ballots against the wishes of the Pennsylvania Legislature.

During an interview with Mobile radio’s FM Talk 106.5, Marshall elaborated on the effort and explained why this was important specifically to Alabamians.

“Clearly, it devalues the efforts of Alabamians but also other states across the country to hold valid and appropriate elections in which the rules apply as established by the legislature and as followed out by election officials,” he said. “And here, not only are we concerned about this election but its also elections that are coming and one of the things that is important is for the Supreme Court to become engaged and specifically lay down specific parameters that we think are constitutionally sound that limits what the courts can do to be able to change the rules of an election during the process of which it is occurring.”

“I think it clearly does,” Marshall replied. “We’ve seen the number of ballots that were counted in Pennsylvania post-Election Day. One of the things Justice Alito at least has done is try to segregate those contest ballots based on the legal issues that are raised. So eventually, we can try to find a resolution to this issue. Again, this is more broad than just simply this election. This relates fundamentally to how we conduct elections in this country. For us moving forward, it is very important for the court to weigh in whether Pennsylvania ends up being a state that ultimately matters and whether or not President Trump or Joe Biden becomes the president, it is something the matters for many elections to come.”
