A woman was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after experiencing symptoms consistent with a lightning strike in the parking lot of a Publix in Alabaster.

Meteorologist James Spann shared information from the National Weather Service in Birmingham about the incident, which happened at about 1:48 p.m. Monday.

From NWS Birmingham: We have confirmed that a female suffered symptoms consistent with a lightning strike in the Publix Parking lot in Alabaster this afternoon at about 1:48 PM. She was transported to a local hospital.

According to the NWS information shared by Spann, two negatively charged lightning strikes were detected in the vicinity of Publix and Zaxby’s at 1:45 p.m., about three minutes before the reported incident.

The woman was transported to a local hospital. No additional information about her condition was included in Spann’s post.

Shortly after the incident, the National Weather Service in Birmingham issued a Special Weather Statement for southwestern Shelby and northeastern Chilton counties. Alabaster was among the locations listed in the statement, which warned of frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.

The weather service warned that lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from a thunderstorm and advised people to seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
