US Chamber of Commerce: Voters prefer free market over government micromanagement

Voters prefer national candidates who believe state officials shouldn’t regulate private business management.

The information is based on a U.S. Chamber of Commerce nationwide survey on governmental economic overreach.

In fact, 54% of all voters polled said they are more concerned about government micromanagement of private businesses then they are of allowing businesses to make decisions they think are best for their customers and shareholders, even if they don’t align with their personal views of the respondents (46%).

According to the U.S. Chamber’s website, the two groups that showed the most concern on possible overreach into private businesses were “base” Republicans at 60% and “soft” or “lean” Republican voters at 65%.  Also, 55% of independents were more concerned about government interference than the prospect of allowing private businesses to choose who they operate with.

“This polling is consistent with other recent Chamber polling that shows aggressive agendas from the progressive left and populist right for greater government management of the economy and micromanagement of businesses were decidedly out of step with the views of voters,” read the report.

“The Chamber’s research reports that a majority of Republican primary voters want to keep government out of business decisions. Sizeable numbers of Independents and Democrats share the same view.”

The survey also demonstrated that concern of government micromanagement in private businesses is largely driven by voters ages 45-54 (61%), Republican men (64%), Republican women (61%), and Independent women (62%).

Surprisingly, the data reported that 60% of Democrats polled said they would choose a candidate that supports free market enterprise over one who favors more restrictive policies on private businesses.

Interviews for this study were collected from 1,000 registered voters from Feb. 15-18. The margin of error is plus-or-minus 3.53%.
