On Wednesday, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville batted down rumors of a May 1, 2025 announcement date for his 2026 campaign for Governor of Alabama.
In an interview with Yellowhammer News after taking FBI Director Kash Patel on a tour of FBI’s headquarters on Redstone Arsenal with fellow U.S. Senator Katie Britt, Tuberville said he had no immediate plans to announce.
“I’m strongly considering it. My wife and I’ve been thinking about it, praying about it, and talking to people. I want to make sure we do the right thing,” Tuberville said.
“You know, of course, it’s a lot better now than it was the last four years of being a senator — you know, when you’re in charge and with the majority. But there’s a lot of strong feelings I have for the state, and I think, if we do this, we’ll make our decision here pretty soon and go on with it.”
Tuberville is reportedly in the final stages of preparing to run for Governor rather than re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2026. Candidates for statewide office can officially begin fundraising on May 26, 2025 – exactly one year before the 2026 Republican primary election.
Either way, Tuberville said the campaign experience would be similar for him.
“Well, it can’t be harder, because I’ll tell you what – I went for a year and a half, even during COVID, six, seven stops a day – driving my truck around, telling people why. Because everybody knew who I was. But they want to know what you’re doing,” Tuberville said.
“But it’s been a great experience, and again, I might go back. We’ll have to wait and see. But I am strongly considering it. And it’s an interesting time in our country. A lot of the power has been shifted back to the states. So, we’ll just have to wait and see a few weeks more.”
