Tigers and Tide ranked No. 1 and No. 2 ahead of massive showdown

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers will be facing each other in what looks on paper like perhaps the biggest regular season game in the history of each program, and the already sky high stakes got even higher on Monday afternoon with the release of the new AP Poll.

Despite a loss to Florida at home, Auburn remained at No. 1. The previously No. 3 ranked Crimson Tide however moved up to No. 2, setting up a No. 1 vs. 2 matchup this weekend in Coleman Coliseum.

With College GameDay in town, it will be the first No. 1 vs. 2 matchup the popular television has covered since 2008, a game which ironically was also an in-state matchup between John Calipari’s Memphis Tigers and Bruce Pearl’s Tennessee Volunteers. Pearl’s team got the victory in 2008 on the road, now he will try to do the same thing against Nate Oats and Alabama.

With both the Tide and Tigers sitting at 9-1 in the SEC, the winner this week will take over the driver’s seat for the regular season title. Both teams control their own destiny right now, but that will change in front of what promises to be a raucous Coleman crowd on Saturday afternoon.

The vote between both schools was a narrow one, with Auburn winning 34-23 to retain their No. 1 ranking. The Tigers have the better record, resume, and potentially the better team, but a recent loss coupled with a road win for Alabama gave the Tide a legitimate argument for the top spot.

As for the rest of the rankings, the SEC continued their domination. Now locking down all three of the top-three with the Gators ascending to No. 3, the conference also owns four of the top-five with Tennessee slotted in at No. 5.

Also coming within the top-ten is Texas A&M at No. 8.

In total, the SEC has nine ranked teams. Kentucky comes in at No. 15, Ole Miss at No. 19, Missouri at No. 21, and Mississippi State at No. 22.
