The Alabama Crimson Tide is clearly serious about fixing what has gone wrong the last couple of years, and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack revealed this week he’s been leaning on the GOAT to help make that happen.

Wommack, who coached a strong defensive unit last year before they were shredded in the Rose Bowl by the eventual national champion Indiana Hoosiers, talked to media after fall camp practice and spoke about how Nick Saban has been helping cut up some tape this offseason.

“There are times where you have to be able to play match coverage to be able to go win in this league,” Wommack said.

“In the offseason Coach Saban and I talk a lot, and that was one thing he brought up watching us on third downs and I thought he had some really good points of having one or two more variations of things we can do to be able to compliment some of the stuff that we’re already doing.”

As for the X’s and O’s on defense, Wommack does not have a better teacher on the planet than Saban, and if he can heed his advice, perhaps a defensive unit that was already expected to be solid could become one of the best in the nation.

It’s been a while since the Tide has had a truly dominant defense, something that was a key to so many of Saban’s best championship teams. Clearly, the former head coach still cares about making that happen, and now it’s up to Wommack and the rest of the staff to make that happen.
