Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen is urging residents to ensure they are registered to vote ahead of the state’s upcoming primary election, with the deadline set for May 4.

The primary election is scheduled for May 19, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. statewide, according to the Secretary of State’s office.

“The right of eligible United States citizens to vote in fair and secure elections is one of the hallmarks of our constitutional republic,” Allen said. “I encourage all eligible Alabamians to register to vote or verify their voter registration status on AlabamaVotes.gov ahead of the May 19 Primary Election.”

Eligible voters can register online through the state’s voter portal or submit a paper application to their local Board of Registrars by mail or in person.

To qualify to vote in Alabama, individuals must be U.S. citizens, residents of the state, and at least 18 years old on or before Election Day. State law also requires that voters not be disqualified due to certain felony convictions or ruled mentally incompetent by a court.

Voters must present a valid photo ID when casting a ballot either in person or absentee.

Election results will be made available through the Secretary of State’s website following the conclusion of voting.

Allen also recognized local election officials for their role in preparing for the upcoming election.

Residents with questions about voter registration can contact the Elections Division of the Secretary of State’s Office or their local Board of Registrars.
