The SEC has filed a shocking amendment to its lawsuit against Louisiana State University on Tuesday and scheduled a meeting for later this week to decide whether or not they should terminate LSU’s membership from the conference.

According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports and other reporters, the conference has filed an amendment to the lawsuit detailing the process for removing LSU from the SEC, which would require a two-thirds majority vote from conference leaders.

The more fascinating angle, though, might be a meeting scheduled for Thursday to decide whether to remove LSU from the conference — or begin the steps toward doing so. In the filing, the conference accuses school officials of “lack of institutional control” over Lane Kiffin and the program, pointing to LSU leaving roster spots open to potentially add former professional players in the future.

In reality, this is likely nothing more than legal posturing and the SEC does not actually want to kick LSU out of the conference, despite the school attempting to add NFL players to its roster. Notably, the Tigers did not add the players in question ahead of the deadline last Friday, but they did keep the possibility open for adding them later this season once they do gain more clarity.

The conference is likely just attempting to back LSU off the topic entirely and enforce its own rules, while LSU is trying to exploit a gap in the rulebook like so many programs across the country have done in recent years.

LSU wants to be a part of the SEC, and the SEC would be wise to keep one of its biggest brands around. That does not mean the courtroom battle is over, however — this is just the latest twist in a long saga of college football legal drama.
