‘Scared Stiff’: Senate ad highlights Trump criticisms of Sessions

On Tuesday, GRIT PAC released its latest ad reminding Alabamians of what President Donald Trump has said about his first attorney general, Jeff Sessions.

GRIT PAC is an independent expenditure committee supporting former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville’s candidacy. Tuberville and Sessions are facing each other in a Republican primary runoff to determine who will face U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) in November.

The 30-second spot, entitled “Jeff Sessions is ‘Scared Stiff,'” features a narrator reading several criticisms of Sessions by Trump.

This includes the president previously calling Sessions “weak,” “ineffective,” “mixed up,” “confused” and “scared stiff.”

As the ad mentions, Trump also has said Sessions did not “have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt.”

“President Trump couldn’t count on career politician Jeff Sessions to have his back,” the narrator adds, “because Sessions only looked out for himself — that’s what career politicians do.”

The spot is slated to run on broadcast television in the Dothan market, as well as in a radio format statewide.

Watch:

This is not the first time that GRIT PAC has accused Sessions of being a “career politician.”

The committee ran an ad before the primary comparing Sessions to U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT). The PAC also released an ad blasting Sessions when the former senator entered the race.

Trump has endorsed Tuberville and even called on Sessions to drop out of the race.

Responding directly to a Trump tweet in May about recusal from the Russian investigation, Sessions said, “Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do. ”

The GOP Senate runoff will be held July 14.
