During ESPN’s College GameDay program on Saturday, the network aired an emotional feature on Alabama teen and LSU superfan Sid Ortis, who passed away last weekend after a tough fight with pediatric bone cancer.
“Never give up when you’re in a bad situation,” Ortis said in his last few days on Earth. “Just keep fighting.”
Ortis’s faith and courage captured the hearts of his community, and even attracted the attention of LSU coach Les Miles, who struck up a friendship with the boy. He invited him to be his guest on the field during LSU’s game against Auburn earlier this year, and frequently called him on the phone to check in.
When Miles found out Ortis had been sent home from the hospital on hospice, he called him one last time.
“I’m praying for you,” he said. “The Lord certainly has a plan and we’re going to miss you. Save me a place.”
