Republican Party Chairman Accepts Large Donation from AEA

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead officially announced last night in an email to GOP Executive Committee members that he will be seeking a second term as ALGOP Chairman.

“After much prayer and discussion with my wife Emily, we have decided to ask for your support for another term as your Chairman,” Armistead wrote.

He then went on to tout the Party’s record under his leadership and particularly noted his fundraising efforts. “Since I was elected Chairman…we have raised over $2 million for the Alabama Republican Party,” he said.

The fundraising comments piqued my interest and I spent a little time this afternoon looking through the Republican Party’s public fundraising records to get an idea of where money was being raised from.

As I dug deeper, something jumped out at me. On September 5th of this year, the Alabama Republican Party took a $5,000 donation from the Alabama Education Association, making them one of the Party’s largest donors. (See Secretary of State’s website HERE or image below)

Let me repeat that just in case it slipped past you: the AEA, who fights Republicans tooth and nail on every important issue, is now one of the Alabama Republican Party’s largest donors.

I’ve heard a ton of talk as Alabama has moved more and more under Republican control that we should be concerned with the AEA and other left wing groups running candidates in our primaries because they can no longer win as Democrats. I share those concerns.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that the current ALGOP leadership does.

I’ve gleaned some other interesting nuggets from the ALGOP’s public disclosure forms and will have more on this very soon. Stay tuned.
