Nurses Association Names April Weaver Legislator of the Year

Representative April Weaver has been named Outstanding Alabama Legislator of the Year for 2012 by The Alabama State Nurses Association (ASNA). The Alabama State Nurses Association is the professional association for Registered Nurses in Alabama. The ASNA Legislator of the Year Award is given annually to a current Alabama State Legislator who has been the most active proponent of healthcare issues in Alabama and has supported nurses and nursing issues during the previous legislative session. This is the second consecutive year that Weaver has received this honor. The award was presented last Thursday night at the ASNA’s annual awards banquet at the Embassy Suites in Hoover.

Weaver sponsored a nursing bill during the 2012 regular legislative session that will help the nursing profession train faculty members and address the demands of the growing number of people that will need healthcare as baby boomers continue to age. She was also a primary speaker at the ASNA “Nurses at the Capitol” rally last April on the steps of the Alabama State House.

“Although she is still relatively new to public office, Rep. Weaver has already had a positive impact in the Legislature,” said ASNA Executive Director Joe Decker. “ASNA is very pleased to have an Alabama nurse and business woman in the legislature as both a role model and friend.”

Rep. Weaver represents parts Shelby and Bibb Counties, including the cities of Alabaster, Pelham and Helena, in the Alabama Legislature. She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Alabama, is a licensed Registered Nurse and has also completed an MBA. She has worked in healthcare management for over 18 years and is presently the Director of Business Development at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. She is also currently serving as a member of Speaker Hubbard’s Commission on Alabama Values and States’ Rights.
