SEC fans who want a look at the behind the scenes of what it takes to run an elite program in today’s day and age of college football are going to be getting a very special treat this summer courtesy of Netflix.
According to the streaming giant, a show coming next summer will debut, offering unprecedented access to teams, coaches, meetings, locker rooms, game days, and much more.
The series is going to be produced by the same people who brought the supremely popular Formula 1 ‘Drive to Survive’ program. Netflix went for another version of Drive to Survive with its recent ‘Full Swing’ look behind the scenes of the PGA Tour and it was a huge success and debuted for a season two.
According to a story from The Athletic, 10 of the 16 schools in the conference are going to be heavily featured including Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M, LSU, and South Carolina. All 16 schools were given the opportunity to participate, but seemingly, some of the biggest names — including Alabama, Georgia, and Texas — all declined.
Schools who opted out will be given the opportunity to opt back in if the show makes it to future seasons. According to the story from The Athletic, there was initial hesitancy from the conference as a whole, but there was fear that they would simply move on to the Big 10 if they declined completely.
“This behind-the-scenes docuseries will bring all the drama and pageantry of Southeastern Conference Football to a worldwide Netflix audience,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said about the show. “Football in the SEC will be presented in a way never seen before through the elite storytelling skills of Box To Box, the content studio that has produced numerous award-winning Netflix docuseries. We are excited about this new delivery of content for SEC fans everywhere.”
