Lane Kiffin has regrets as to the way things ended with his previous job.

Kiffin brought college football fans perhaps the most chaotic coach hiring cycle we have ever seen this past year when he took the job to coach the LSU Tigers with the Ole Miss Rebels still in the College Football Playoff.

Famously, or rather infamously, Kiffin tried to leverage Ole Miss administration into allowing him to coach the Rebels in the postseason while also leaving for LSU after the year, something they were never going to let happen. It led to a whole lot more drama and ugliness at the end when he did get on the plane for Baton Rouge, and now in his first SEC Media Days as the Tigers head coach, Kiffin says he wishes things did not go down that way.

“Yeah, I do,” Kiffin told ESPN Thursday when asked if he wishes he went about things differently. “I wish I would have gone in when I met with [Ole Miss AD Keith Carter] and said, ‘I’ve made the decision to go.’ I wish I would have just said, ‘Hey, I’d like to coach the team,’ and he’d say, ‘No.’ And I’d say, ‘Hey, OK, I appreciate it.’ [I wish I’d] move on [and] never even discussed it again….There was no way to do what I was trying to do.”

Kiffin did reflect however and say that he believes living with regrets rather than being arrogant about it is a positive for him.

“But I think that’s a good thing that I look at life that way now, instead of saying, ‘No, I don’t. I was right.’ I look at things always now, like, how could I have done them better? But it’s also easier when you’re further removed. There’s no emotion involved.”

Kiffin will take his Tigers back to Oxford to face Ole Miss early on in a week three game which will be one of the most anticipated regular season SEC games the conference has ever seen.

Whether he was right or wrong in his departure remains to be seen, but ultimately, Kiffin has turned the page to his next chapter.
