Freshly defeated U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) is continuing to vote against federal judicial nominations made by President Donald J. Trump.
Jones, who lost his reelection bid in a November 3 blowout, is now a “lame duck” senator through January 3.
On Monday, Jones voted against invoking cloture on the nomination of Kristi Haskins Johnson to be U.S. district judge for the Southern District of Mississippi. This vote was effectively in support of blocking the nomination.
However, Jones, exactly two weeks after his ballot box defeat, on Tuesday then supported Johnson’s nomination when it came to the up-or-down final vote.
The same day, Jones voted against invoking cloture on the nomination of Benjamin Joel Beaton to be U.S. district judge for the Western District of Kentucky. Alabama’s outgoing junior senator then voted against Beaton’s nomination on its final vote.
Both nominees were confirmed with bipartisan support, including the “aye” votes of U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL).
Also on Tuesday, Jones voted against invoking cloture on the nomination of Toby Crouse to be U.S. district judge for the District of Kansas. The final vote on that nomination had yet to be held at the time this article was published.
U.S. Senator-elect Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) will take office on January 3 upon the beginning of the 117th Congress.
