On Friday, U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) blamed his U.S. Senate Republican primary opponent, former Business Council of Alabama head Katie Britt, for playing a role in the appointment of who he deemed to be “liberal, activist federal judges,” who were part of a federal court three-judge panel rejecting the congressional redistricting maps passed by the Alabama Legislature in a special session last year.
Late Saturday afternoon, the Britt campaign fired back at Brooks, charging Brooks had attacked former President Donald Trump in his criticism of the picks.
In a statement, Britt called Brooks’ “liberal” label of Trump-appointed U.S. District Judges Terry Moorer, of the Southern District of Alabama, and Anna Manasco, of the Northern District of Alabama, two of the three judges on the redistricting lawsuit panel, his “latest half-cocked episode.”
“Congressman Brooks has once again launched an attack on President Trump by wrongly claiming he appointed ‘liberal, activist federal judges,'” Britt said in a statement issued Saturday afternoon. “The people of Alabama can clearly see Mo Brooks and his band of do-nothing career politicians will throw anyone under the bus when they think it serves their own selfish purposes. We’re seeing that play out in classic permanent politician style here. Alabamians know that Mo Brooks is not loyal to them, to President Trump or to anyone not named Mo Brooks.”
“The embarrassing lie that President Trump would appoint liberal activists to the
federal bench is simply Mo Brooks’ latest half-cocked episode,” she continued. “I will not apologize for standing with President Trump to get constitutional conservatives confirmed to the federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States. I’m proud that President Trump’s historic success filling judicial vacancies with tremendous appointments will help preserve the country we know and love for our children and our children’s children.”
In a statement given to Yellowhammer News, the Brooks campaign doubled-down on its assertion Britt was responsible for the appointments and claimed Britt “lied” to Trump and “owns” the outcome of last week’s federal court decision.
“Katie Britt brags about vetting Alabama’s federal judges when working for Richard Shelby,” campaign spokesman Will Hampson said in the statement. “But she lied to President Trump, telling him during the nomination process that these RINO judges were conservative.”
“Well, this week Katie Britt’s RINO judges ordered a new map that segregates Alabama by race, creating one more Democrat congressional seat in Alabama—one more Democrat vote for Nancy Pelosi,” he added. “Katie Britt owns this—she is going to wear it.”
