The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are trying to gain a foothold politically in the Yellowhammer State.

Robert Hunter is the Democratic Nominee for Alabama House in District 28, and he’s now touting an official endorsement from DSA national.

“I am proud to announce the campaign’s first national endorsement,” Hunter said. “Thank you DSA national for your support!”

The Democratic candidate will be going up against Republican Mack Butler (R-Rainbow City), who has served in the Alabama House since 2022.

Hunter is a self described Democratic socialist who is also the Vice Chair of Minority Affairs for Etowah County. He has been an active Youth Caucus member within the State Executive Committee for the past six years.

While the DSA hasn’t been successful in Alabama, they have won some key elections in other places across the country. The most well-known DSA victory was when Zohran Mamdani was elected the new mayor of New York City.

Several of Alabama’s prominent Republican leaders have been speaking out against the rise of socialism in the opposing Party.

“Look, I think what we’re seeing is is beyond alarming, and I think the Democratic Party has been taken over by the far left, by the Democrat Socialists of America, and what we find the common thread between all of them is that they actually hate America,” U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) said. “When you look at the policies they’re putting forth, their policies that ultimately take away our freedoms, that create dependency on government.”

According to Hunter’s campaign website, his “goals as State Representative center on transparency, accessibility, and community empowerment. He is committed to ensuring residents have better access to local resources, strengthening communication between constituents and their elected officials, and creating meaningful opportunities for public input on legislation.”
