How many Alabama and Auburn NFL players would it take to pay Greece’s debt?

Cam Newton Derrick Thomas
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Greece is currently in a financial bind and needs to make up a 1.5 Billion Euro shortfall to pay off its creditors. Sure, 1.5 billion anything is a lot, but just exactly how much is that worth? When converted into dollars, the sum comes to about $1.66 million, but why not convert it to a metric that we Alabamians understand best: Football contracts.

Alabama and Auburn have been incredibly successful on the college football field for the past seven years and have sent many of their championship-winning players to the next level to make serious money. While Alabama bests Auburn in total number of players in the NFL, Auburn has the highest paid player between the schools with Cam Newton making $103.8 million over five years.

After totaling all of the salaries of the active NFL players from both schools ($137,824,601 a year), it would take 12 years of each one playing without injury to bail out Greece.

Just a little something to think about when we live in a nation with a debt of $18.3 trillion.
