Greg Byrne emphasizes importance of ‘stability’ after locking up DeBoer, Oats

The University of Alabama made a couple of expected but huge moves Wednesday, approving lucrative contract extensions for football coach Kalen DeBoer and men’s basketball coach Nate Oats.

Each coach is going to be paid as a top-five name in their respective sports, continuing the massive amount of spending from this athletic department on its coaching staffs as they try to continue competing for championships across all sports.

While speaking about the extensions becoming official, director of athletics Greg Byrne talked about the importance of stability in explaining why he asked UA to make these investments.

“Absolutely, it is a significant investment by our department, by our University, it is something that we have spent a lot of time researching on to make sure we are competitive in the marketplace and at the same time making sure we have the right people in these positions,” Byrne began. “I’ve spoken with President Mohler about this and our trustees about this – the importance of stability during this time we’re in right now and we believe this gives us an opportunity to do that with the men and women that are leading our programs.”

While it may be a little bit of a gamble from Byrne to pay his coaches so lucratively, there’s no question that stability is the name of the game in this department right now, and nobody seems to want to be going anywhere.
